Name: Nahal
Degree: BA Italian & Spanish - Cardiff University. MA Translation Studies - Cardiff University
How did you spend your Year Abroad?
Studying at Universidad de Guadalajara & studying at Università di Pavia
Briefly outline your journey from graduation to now.
I graduated from my BA in 2018, and did community work whilst teaching English to foreign students. I then did my masters in 2020 and into COVID years, where I also taught Spanish online by creating my own service called VariLanguages. I then got my first job as a translation project manager in Swansea called Wolfestone, then found a better opportunity in London with a company called Mother Tongue, which focused on transcreation, here it was a role of Account Manager. After a few years in the translation industry, I set up my own events not-for-profit, Virgo Events, I realised I wanted a more people-facing role. I applied for a few roles which I did shortly, and now I find myself as an events coordinator for targetjobs (GroupGTI).
What is your current job?
Events & Programmes Executive at GroupGTI - Student employability/education sector
What does your current job involve day to day?
My current role is organising student networking & employability events. I look after the entire event lifecycle. I plan programmes, onboard partners, organise logistics, do design, market the events, do student interviews, and host the events themselves. There's many components to the job and it's extremely dynamic on a day-to-day basis.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I think it's a fulfilling role - helping students with their career journeys. I also love organising and being the person behind bringing people together. Everyday is different and you get to meet lots of different types of people in a variety of industries!
What advice would you give to someone interested in this job?
I would suggest intermingling it with language skills, as sadly, the role doesn't really use my languages. Looking for event roles in the country of the language you speak, or in an international company, or an organisation that requires language skills for global clientele.
How has your languages degree been useful during your career so far?
There are plenty of transferable skills from a languages background. Communication with a wide variety of people, translating ideas into action, providing an alternative perspective for looking at something, being organised, being flexible & adaptable, and finally, being open-minded and willing to learn new concepts.
Do you use or practise your languages outside of work?
I listen to a lot of international music which helps keep my language skills alive. I intermittently watch movies and attend film festivals. I also have a couple of close friends from Spanish-speaking countries which I do community work with.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your career journey?
I have changed my career a lot, and so this is reflective of the plentiful opportunities for language graduates!
