How did you spend your Year Abroad?

Working in Santiago, Chile, as:

A Trade Analyst:

  • Worked on Santander Trade Mission; found potential business partners for British businesses in Chile, and translated meetings in both Buenos Aires & Santiago.

  • The proper and efficient use of our Customer Relation Management (CRM) system (Insightly) to ensure the smooth and consistent progress of work with clients, manage opportunities, and track the business pipeline.

  • Regular liaison and communication with UKTI London contacts to keep all parties up to date with regards to delivery of services and latest procedures.

  • Assisted with market research to be provided to clients as part of Overseas Market Intelligence Service (OMIS) package.

  • Produced market intelligence reports on the Chilean economy, both with a macro and more sectorial focus for UK companies to aid with their entrance into the Chilean market. Within a month of my time at the Cámara I produced market intelligence reports for two separate British companies which both led to sales of our services to introduce them into the Chilean market.

  • Assisted UK clients with translation and communication issues within Chile such as border/customs complications, arranging and translating meetings, and arranging documentation for the appropriate governmental organisations in the UK and Chile to safeguard the delivery of product samples.

A Publications, Translation, & Database Intern:

  • Assisted in the publication of various monthly & quarterly economic reports providing invaluable and in-depth knowledge of Chilean economy and its most important markets.

  • Participated and gained experience in the Education committee, promoting British culture within Chilean schools.

  • Planned and executed more than 40 events, seminars and workshops.

Briefly outline your journey from graduation to now.

Transitioned into data analytics - during lockdown I learnt how to code in SQL and Python and became an analyst.

What is your current job? Senior Data Analyst, Ocado, Grocery and Logistics

What does your current job involve day to day?

  • Consulting with UK and international retailers to improve last mile network capacity

  • Collaborating with Data Science teams to enhance understanding and replicate insights of network efficiency

  • Creating and maintaining complex commercial and data models

  • Regularly presenting and collaborating with clients globally to improve network efficiency

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Varied work. For example, one week I was analysing routing efficiency in Tokyo and the next week I was helping a retailer identify what geography to expand into in Detroit!

What advice would you give to someone interested in this job?

There are so many Youtube channels, websites and books available about programming and data analytics, I'd encourage people to start watching and reading about the topic to decide if it's something they're interested in. If it seems appealing, then start learning and create some mini projects for yourself. I began learning and completed some different projects; I reorganised my Spotify playlists based on machine learning models to cluster similar music, created a website based on football players, and did lots of webscraping!

How has your languages degree been useful during your career so far?

It's been incredibly useful to join calls with Spanish clients and be able to present and explain different concepts in Spanish. More often than not, the Spanish clients I work with don't have great English, which means our business relies on Google Translate and translators to explain work-related concepts. Being able to explain my thoughts directly has proved invaluable and incredibly time efficient, as I don't have to wait for a translator, nor take the time to explain the tricky concept to the translator! Also, the process of learning a language definitely made it easier to learn a coding language.

Do you use or practise your languages outside of work?

I still read books in Spanish, but don't keep it up as much as I would like
