Name: Denys Wilcox
Degree: French and Spanish with Portuguese
How did you spend your Year Abroad?
Teaching in France
Briefly outline your journey from graduation to now.
Studying Modern Languages enabled me to keep an open mind when entering the job market. Music became a huge passion of mine whilst at university, so my first thought was to try and forge a career on the business side of the industry.
What is your current job? Senior Artist & Label Relations Manager, SoundCloud
What does your current job involve day to day?
My role involves speaking to artists and record labels on a daily basis, educating them on the value of SoundCloud and how they can harness it to build a devoted fanbase.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
No two days are the same. It's also incredibly people-oriented, so I spend a lot of my time meeting with artists and labels.
What advice would you give to someone interested in this job?
Just go for it. That's my broad advice for Modern Languages students who are weighing up applying for a role that might not be the most obvious match. Whether it be Sales, Marketing, PR or anything else, it's very likely that there will be some kind of international component to the company's operations. Your knowledge and skillset might set you apart for reasons you didn't even anticipate.
How has your languages degree been useful during your career so far?
My background in languages (and the cultural knowledge that this has afforded me) 100% helped me during the interview process for my first two roles in the music industry. When I applied for Columbia Records (Sony Music), they were particularly interested to hear my passion for two of their international artists, Rosalía and Lous and the Yakuza. Similarly, my first role at SoundCloud involved working with European territories. My knowledge of French, Spanish and Portuguese undoubtedly gave me a unique edge during the interview process.
Do you use or practise your languages outside of work?
I love travelling and am about to spend 6 weeks in some remote parts of South America. Not speaking Spanish would undoubtedly be a huge limiting factor.
