Name: Danielle Boaler

Degree: BA Hons French and Spanish (Accelerated Beginners) Nottingham Trent

How did you spend your Year Abroad?

Summers working at Disneyland Paris, one year studying at la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares

Briefly outline your journey from graduation to now.

It has been an adventure. I have challenged myself in many ways in order to keep up my languages and to ensure I have used them in my job roles. I have used my language skills in every job I have done since I graduated back in 2013.

What is your current job? Head of Spanish (Djanogly City Academy Nottingham)

What does your current job involve day to day?

Teaching Years 7 -12 Spanish. I ensure the smooth running of the department, mentor staff, plan lessons, write curriculums and also organise well-being events for staff. I also run the school Garden Club and have been involved in making our school more sustainable.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Seeing students progress in Spanish and inspiring young people.

What advice would you give to someone interested in this job?

It is hard work for sure but it is rewarding and every day is different.

How has your languages degree been useful during your career so far?

I have used my languages in every job role.

Do you use or practise your languages outside of work?

I meet Spanish friends and go to Spain when I can. I have an exchange partner in Valencia. Occasionally I am a Spanish speaking tour guide in Nottingham. This really helps keep up my fluency and use my Spanish in a different way. I used to translate a lot from Spanish into English for charity.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your career journey?

You can do anything with languages! You will have a very varied career for sure.
